Lot 11: Rover 80
Vintage, Classic & Collectors's Motor Vehicles, BCA (27th November 2007)
When first appearing in 1949 to replace the redoubtable P3 Series, the new Rover P4 represented a considerable break with previous Rover traditions. Gone was the pre-war styling to be replaced by an up-to-the-minute shape which was very la mode and seen almost as heresy by some of the traditional Rover clientele. However, this new series was to more than prove its mettle, remaining in production until 1964, and variants ranged from the 2-litre 60 through to the 2.6-litre 95/100/110 models. Quintessentially British and superbly built, the P4s were amongst the hardest wearing cars of their period and are still seen in surprisingly large numbers with many survivors giving reliable and regular service whilst benefiting from good specialist support and spares availability, together with an enthusiastic owners' club.Offered here is a 1961 Rover 80, first registered in Kent on 21st July that year and retaining its original registration number. Correctly finished in grey over blue, with blue leather interior, the car appears to remain essentially original and unrestored. Said to drive very well, it comes with much history including the original driver's handbook and workshop manual. A complete toolkit is present and various period accessories are fitted including signpost reading lamp, auxiliary lamps, tow bar and sunshine roof. The coachwork and chassis are reported as being in good condition and the car starts 'on the button'. Recent work has included a refurbished braking system with new servo and fitment of a gas-flowed lead-free high-performance cylinder head with new valves and springs. All major mechanical components are described as being in very good order whilst the car's blue leather upholstery remains extremely presentable, as do the carpets and interior woodwork etc.
