Lot 002: 1981 MERCEDES-BENZ 450 SLC

Sharing the same basic (R107) platform architecture as its convertible sibling, the Mercedes-Benz 450SLC fixed head coupe was introduced in 1972. A full four-seater, the model's stretched wheelbase was disguised by various ingenious styling cues such as the louvred sail panels that adorned its rear three-quarter windows. Equipped with all round coil-sprung independent suspension, power steering and four wheel disc brakes, it proved a comfortable and refined grand tourer. Predominantly allied to automatic transmission, its 4520cc SOHC V8 engine developed a quoted 217bhp and 265lbft of torque. Reputedly capable of over 130mph in standard tune, Mercedes' flagship coupe enjoyed a highly successful second career as a rally car including two Bandama wins and a second place on the East African Safari. Finished in silver with cream leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, automatic gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, paintwork and wheels / tyres (though, he rates the bodywork as "very good"). Said to be "a lovely car that drives as well as it looks", we understand that its recorded mileage of 77,824 is supported by "full service history from new". Reportedly benefiting from "almost unworn carpets" (save for some fading to the boot one), air-conditioning and an electric sunroof, it will be making the journey from Somerset to London under its own power. Riding on alloy wheels, this well-presented Mercedes is offered for sale with full service history, "wads of bills", MOT certificate valid until August 1st 2006 and road tax until 31st June 2006. Luxury coupe motoring rarely comes much cheaper.
