Lot 354: 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Coupé
International Historic Motorsport Show, Bonhams (25th February 2006)
This left-hand drive Giulietta Sprint was imported into the UK from South Africa by Robert Coucher (currently editor of Octane magazine). At time of importation Robert was assistant editor of Your Classic and this car featured many times in that magazine between 1991 and 1994, with monthly articles describing the work undertaken. An album containing copies of all these articles comes with the car, as does a large history file of related invoices.
Since the vendor purchased this Giulietta Sprint in 1996 it has been professionally prepared and maintained for historic rallying, with over £16,000 spent. Its many achievements include Classic Marathon 9th overall and 2nd in class (2000); Scottish Malts 3rd overall, fastest car on tests and Gold Medal (2001); Scottish Malts 1st in class, Gold Medal and 3rd fastest on tests (2002); Targa Rusticana 7th overall and 1st in class (2002); Classic Marathon 14th overall and 3rd in class (2003); and Iberia Classic, 5th overall, first British finisher and 1st in class (2003).
Highlights of its specification (a full listing is supplied) include a 1,600cc engine - built by recognised Alfa Romeo racing specialist Jim Evans - developing 119bhp at the flywheel (96bhp at the wheels). The transmission, suspension and brakes have been appropriately up-rated, while the bodyshell - described as ‘good, strong and rust free’ - was shot blasted to bare metal and repainted in 1999. Incorporating a full Safety Devices roll cage, the interior is fitted with two Recaro reclining seats and boasts new black carpeting throughout (Jaguar Wilton costing £893) and new door trim panels. A supplementary wiring loom caters for the extra equipment fitted, which includes all the accoutrements necessary for historic rallying.
Very quick and with handling to match, this Giulietta Sprint represents an opportunity to acquire an expertly prepared and well-maintained car competitive at the highest level of historic rallying. It is offered with current road fund licence, MoT to September 2006 and FIVA Passport.
