Lot 315: 1995/6 Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI Touring Car Ex-Giancarlo Fisichella

British & Continental Sports & Touring Motor Cars, Coys (29th March 2008)

1995/6 Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI Touring Car Ex-Giancarlo Fisichella
Based on the floorpan of the Fiat Tipo, the 155 represented the first of a line of Fiat-based Alfa Romeos. Power was provided by Alfa's own engines, either the all alloy, twin spark plug, four cylinder with 1.7 and 2.0 litre capacity, the 2.5 litre V6 cylinder unit or either 2.0 or 2.5 litre diesel motors, all of which were mated to a five speed manual gearbox. During 1995/'96, however, the four cylinder units were replaced by Fiat-derived four valve per cylinder engines that would also see service in the 155's successor, the 156. All 155s shared the same basic straight edge body design, highlighted by a wedge-shaped profile that tapers from the tip of the high tail right down to the headlamps. Notably, in order to meet homologation requirements for racing, the 155 came with an extendable front splitter and a height adjustable rear spoiler in the boot, although the former was soon replaced by a fixed splitter following protests on the race rack. 1995 had also seen the body widened by two inches to accommodate a wider track and a faster steering rack fitted, again to meet homologation requirements. As part of the racing programme Alfa Romeo produced the ultimate rendition of the 155 model, the V6 Ti. Powered by a four valve per cylinder V6 engine delivering some 420bhp via a six speed sequential gearbox to a four wheel drive chassis, this car also boasted carbon-fibre body panels. On its debut in the DTM, the German Touring Car Championship, the car won outright and, driven by Nicola Larini, it went on to win 1993 championship crown after fending off fierce German opposition; the following year Gabriel Tarquini won the British Touring Car Championship. Indeed, the all conquering 155 V6 Ti swept all rivals aside, not only in the DTM and BTCC but also in the CIS, the Italian Touring Car Championship. Driven in period by Formula One star Giancarlo Fisichella, chassis 011 was rebuilt over 2005/2006 by Alfa Corse, the works Alfa Romeo racing team and with the car is confirmation that the car was both built at the its Milan works in 1995 and subsequently campaigned as a works machine. Presented in excellent all round condition, this car represents an important piece of Alfa Romeo racing history and would be an ideal addition to any serious motor sport collection.
