Lot 511: 1965 Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint Coupé
Festival Of Speed, Bonhams (7th July 2006)
This original right-hand drive car was manufactured in May 1965 and registered to Alfa GB in London. It was restored and race-prepared to FIA specification during the mid-1990s. Historic Alfa expert Chris Whelan rebuilt the engine, which features factory-option triple Weber 45 carburettors, Arias pistons and Kent cams. Carefully balanced and lightened, this unit recorded a maximum output of 220bhp in a 2004 dynamometer test. The body was restored by Phil Elliot and the work completed by noted marque specialist Andrew Thorogood to his normal high standard. Finished in Alfa dark blue (blu olondaise), the car is fitted with a RollCentre bespoke six-point cage, multi-point fire extinguisher system, FIA-certified seats and alloy 5”x15” TechnoMagnesio wheels of correct pattern.
Aquired by the Vendor at the Bonhams Goodwood Revival auction 2005, it is offered for sale due to medical reasons. The car was last used in competition at the VSCC Pomeroy Trophy. This Alfa 2600 is eligible for many of the most prestigious meetings and series including Goodwood, Tour Auto, Top Hat, HRSR, VSCC Pomeroy Trophy and the FIA Historic Championship. It has been raced frequently over the last ten years, participating in the Goodwood Revival’s St Mary’s Trophy on three occasions: 1998, 1999 and 2001. Former BTCC Champion Will Hoy was its co-driver on the last of these, which is thought to be Will’s last full race before his untimely death. ‘HHU 768D’ has also competed at Spa, Mas du Clos, Silverstone GP and practically every other track in the UK. Its most recent race was at Silverstone in 2004.
Taxed and MoT’d until May 2007, this car comes complete with a comprehensive documentary file, FIA and HSCC papers. A useful spares package includes front and rear bumpers, a Goodwood requirement. Tractable, reliable and unusual, the Alfa is as popular with organisers as the spectating public. A joy to drive on the track or rally stage, it offers the prospective buyer access to a wide range of prestige events at modest cost.
