Lot 431: 1970 Jaguar E Type Series II Roadster
Fine Motor Cars, Coys (5th July 2008)
In 1966, five years after the introduction of the E-Type, Jaguar updated the wildly popular sports car with the launch of the Series 2. Open headlights without glass covers, a wrap-around rear bumper, re-positioned and larger front indicators and taillights below the bumpers, better cooling aided by an enlarged radiator intake and twin electric cooling fans, together with uprated brakes, are all hallmarks of Series 2 cars. Cars destined for America were detuned as a result of having to meet that country's emission regulations, and, breathing through two Stromberg carburettors, suffered a dramatic drop in power to just 177bhp; European market cars, however, still sported triple SU carburettors and continued to produce the 265bhp of the original E Type. The engine of the Series 2 cars is easily identified by the change from smooth polished camshaft covers to a more industrial, black and aluminium 'ribbed' appearance. Inside there were also changes: the dashboard was redesigned with rocker switches being substituted for flick switches, which also lost their symmetrical layout, to meet American health and safety regulations, and there were new seats which, although purists claimed they lacked the style of the originals, were certainly more comfortable; air conditioning and power assisted steering were available as factory options. As before, the E Type was available in roadster, fixed-head coupe and 2+2 models. This 1970 roadster has had only five registered owners from new. The floors have been recently replaced and are totally rust-free while the interior is in very good order and, unlike a lot of E Types, it has not been over-restored and therefore retains a genuinely original patina. Also in superb mechanical condition, with both engine and gearbox running perfectly, this Jaguar comes complete with a substantial history file including a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate detailing the car's build, assorted photographs, and past MoT certificates dating back to 1991. Whilst this car requires some work to get it up to concours d'elegance standard, it is a joy to drive. It also represents excellent value for money for anybody looking to acquire one of these legendary sportscars for their own collection.
