Lot 053: Jaguar E-Type S2 FHC

Classic Car, Motorcycle & Automobilia, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (23rd September 2009)

Although die-hard E-Type aficionados will always claim that the Series 1 is the car to have, in the real world there is no doubt that the Series 2, launched in October 1968, is the better car to drive. Visually distinguished by its slightly higher, uncowled front headlights, wider front grille and different tail lights, it had twin fans for better cooling, an all-synchro gearbox, better seats, better brakes, improved switchgear and slightly more room in the cabin. Supplied new to America in 1970, this Series 2 E-Type was imported back to the UK in April 1990 and professionally converted to right hand-drive. Between October 2008 and June 2009 the car was treated to a 7,000 body restoration and bare metal repaint which resulted in the fine specimen you see today the paint finish is superb and the panel gaps are all excellent. There are lots of bills from 1996 onwards showing regular maintenance, including a full engine rebuild with new pistons, an unleaded head and electronic ignition at Frenchay Garage less than 10,000 miles ago at a cost of 3,600. About three years ago in the hands of a previous owner who kept the car for seven years, it was driven to Munich and back to attend a family gathering and is said to have "never missed a beat". Other significant bills cover new front shock absorbers and springs in 1999 together with new brake pipes all round, plus an overhaul of the rear brakes and the handbrake in December 2007. A stainless steel exhaust system has also been fitted along with 72-spoke wire wheels. The vendor states that the car now needs some tidying of the interior to bring it up to the standard of the exterior. Currently taxed and with an MOT until May 2010, the car comes with the aforementioned history, photos of the recent bodywork repairs, plus a spare set of triple SU carburettors and a rebuilt big valve head. Altogether a very straight and sound car that is ready for immediate use but can be gradually improved over time. It looks excellent value at the guide price suggested today.
