Lot 305: 1964 Jaguar S-Type 3.8-Litre Racing Saloon

Motor Cars, Bonhams (24th March 2007)

1964 Jaguar S-Type 3.8-Litre Racing Saloon
This Jaguar S-Type racing saloon was built from a bare shell in 1997/8 by Renaissance Cars Ltd and since then has been continually developed; R S Coachworks being responsible for the bodywork, Roger Dowson for all general engineering and Peter Larder of Sigma for the engine, which has made this car one of the quickest 3.8-litre Jaguar saloons in the country. Driven mainly by Roger Cope and lately by Simon Garrad, this car has competed very successfully in JEC events, winning class championships for four years (including 2006), class honours for two years with CSCC and 2nd in class for two seasons with HSCC, plus Top Hat and Spa events. It comes complete with all build and running details, plus receipts and bills totalling over £40,000 in build costs. Highlights of its impressive specification (a fully detailed listing is available for inspection) include a seam-welded bodyshell - lowered, strengthened and stiffened - fitted with a Safety Devices roll cage and lightened steel panels. The front cross-member and rear cage are solidly mounted and strengthened, while the suspension features an up-rated anti-roll bar, adjustable coil-over shocks (with spare springs) and polyurethane bushes throughout. AP vented discs/calipers – by B G developments – are fitted all round. The transmission comprises a Jaguar all-synchromesh four-speed gearbox, limited-slip differential modified by Roger Dowson Engineering; lightened/balanced prop shaft and competition clutch. Race-prepared by Peter Lander of Sigma Engineering, the powerful (approximately 350bhp) XK 3.8-litre engine features a six-branch exhaust system and larger (2”) twin SU carburettors on a fabricated inlet manifold. Other noteworthy features include Lumenition transistorised ignition with adjustable rev limiter; lightweight alternator; high-torque starter motor; alloy radiator and oil cooler; lightweight fuel lines; and boot mounted fuel tank with twin Facet pumps. The fully rewired interior is fitted with a Corbeau race seat with 3” harness, fully plumbed fire extinguisher and walnut dashboard with new instruments. Competitive and ‘on the button’, having been freshly set up at Sigma Engineering, the car is offered complete with a substantial quantity of spare parts to include body panels, differential, lights, wheels, etc.
