Lot 737: 1969 Jaguar E-Type 4.2-Litre Series II Roadster
Collectors' Motor Cars, Cycles & Automobilia, Bonhams (30th April 2007)
Launched in October 1964, the 4.2-litre version of Jaguar’s sensational E-Type sports car brought with it a more user-friendly all-synchromesh gearbox and a superior Lockheed brake servo along with the bigger, torquier engine. Apart from ‘4.2’ badging, the car’s external appearance was unchanged, but under the skin there were numerous detail improvements, chiefly to the electrical and cooling systems, and to the seating arrangements. Top speed remained the same at around 150mph, the main performance gain resulting from the larger engine being improved acceleration. Like its 3.8-litre forbear, the 4.2-litre E-Type was built in roadster and coupe forms, and in 1966 gained an additional ‘2+2’ variant on a 9”-longer wheelbase. Intended to extend the E-Type’s appeal beyond the traditional sportscar-buying market, the new ‘family orientated’ coupé came with improved visibility thanks to an increased glass area, more headroom, improved heating and ventilation, additional luggage space and optional Borg-Warner automatic transmission. Changes to United States safety and emissions legislation prompted the revised Series II E-Type of 1968. The headlight fairings were deleted, enlarged side and rear lights adopted, while a thickened front bumper centre section bridged a larger radiator intake. Interior changes included a collapsible steering column and rocker switches in place of the earlier toggles.
Rebuilt from the chassis upwards in the 1980s, this superb E-Type 4.2-Litre Roadster has appeared in the popular Yorkshire Television series Heartbeat. Finished in Old English White with red leather upholstery, matching carpets and black hood, the car has the desirable four-speed manual transmission while other noteworthy features include a radio and wood-rim steering wheel. ‘MVU 906G’ is offered with Operating, Maintenance & Service Handbook; lubrication chart, a quantity of expired MoTs; current road fund licence; MoT to June 2007 and Swansea V5/V5C registration documents. An opportunity to acquire a well restored and equally well cared for E-Type in arguably its most desirable, 4.2-Litre Roadster configuration.
