Lot 020: Triumph TR4A IRS

Brightwells Classic Car Auction, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (11th July 2007)

Produced between 1965 and 1967, the TR4A was an evolution of the gorgeous Michelotti-styled Triumph TR4, updated with a larger engine, new chassis, wider track and rack-and-pinion steering. It was hoped the new, but more complex independent rear suspension would address the buying public's desire for more comfortable riding sports cars. However, in response to dealer requests, approximately 25% of TR4As were still produced with a solid rear axle option, similar to the earlier TR4.The new suspension eventually proved itself with the buying public and in racing, with three TR4A IRS models posting a team win and finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in class at the Sebring 12-hour race of 1966. Powered by Triumph's trusty 2.2-litre four-cylinder engine producing 105bhp, the car was good for an easy 111mph.Exported new to America, this 1965 IRS model is said to be in very good condition throughout having been sympathetically restored while in the States. This included fitting a new hood and recovering the seats in black leather. The car is said to drive very well with an impressive turn of speed when provoked. It is MOTd until May 2008 but, at the time of cataloguing, was still awaiting an age-related number plate to be issued by the DVLA. Another great car to keep at that second home abroad.
