Lot 234: 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190 D - Padre Pio

Coys is proud to offer the Mercedes 190 D which was the personal car of Padre Pio. Indeed, this is the very vehicle in which he was driven in on his many visits to help the poor and the unfortunate. The secret of this particular car's past was jealously guarded by its owner Cristiani Domenico for over thirty years during which time he carefully restored the car. Only when it passed into the hands of its current owner was the marvellous story of its past revealed to the outside world. Cristiani Domenico, the previous owner of the Mercedes Benz 190 D, the car which belonged to Saint Pio, explains how he acquired it: "In 1964, I was involved in erecting a crane at the building site of Fuzio Nicola, who had obtained a contract for the construction of various parts of the hospital (Sollievo della Sofferenza). During a work break, I went into a farmyard belonging to the Capuchin Friars, where I noticed an abandoned Mercedes. I asked for information from Padre Priore as to whether it might be possible to purchase the car, but he answered that he would need to speak to Padre Pio first, as the car had actually been donated to him. Finally, after some time, I managed to meet both Padre Priore and Padre Pio, and at that point Padre Priore turned to Padre Pio and said 'Padre Pio, shall we give the car to Mim?'; then Padre Pio approached me, looked to me in the eyes, gave me two pats on my shoulder and turned to Padre Priore saying Diamangel la macchina a Mim, che nu bravo guaglione' (Let's give him the car, because he's a nice chap). And they didn't want anything in exchange: it was Padre Pio who gave me this Mercedes as a present. The car at the time had the number plate FG 127061; they gave me the car without making a transfer of ownership in that being Capuchin Friars, voted to poverty, they were not allowed to possess anything in their name. In moving the car to Bari (where I have been living since) the number plate changed to BA 409940." This marvellous piece of history is offered with a signed and notarised declaration from its previous owner Francesco Forgione, confirming the car's donation from Padre Pio to himself. Also accompanying this very special Mercedes-Benz are copies of television interviews and newspaper articles about the vehicle. Durante il lavoro presso l'ospedale, in un momento di pausa, mi recai presso una masseria dei frati cappuccini (adibita a caseificio) e notai la parte frontale di un veicolo Mercedes; l'auto era in completo stato di abbandono. Mi rivolsi, quindi, all'allora Padre Priore per chiedere informazioni circa l-acquisto della vettura, ma quest'ultimo rispose che senza prima aver consultato Padre Pio (dato che comunque si trattava di una donazione fatta a lui), non era in grado di prendere decisione alcuna, circa un'eventuale vendita. Finalmente (con un po' d'insistenza), dopo alcuni mesi, riuscii a incontrare il Padre Priore (che ricordo minuto e di bassa statura) e Padre Pio; a quel punto il Padre Priore si rivolse a Padre Pio e gli chiese "Padre Pio gliela diamo la macchina a Mim?"; allora Padre Pio si avvicin, mi guard, mi diede due pacche sulla spalla e, rivolgendosi al Padre Priore, rispose "Diamangel la macchina a Mim, che nu bravo guaglione". E, addirittura, non pretesero nulla in cambio: fu proprio Padre Pio a regalarmi questa Mercedes. L'automobile all'epoca era targata FG 127061; feci il passaggio di propriet con l'articolo, in quanto i frati cappuccini, essendo votati alla povert, non potevano avere nulla a loro intestato. Trasferendo il veicolo a Bari (luogo in cui avevo e ho residenza), la targa fu cambiata in BA 409940."Padre Pio - Saint Pio of PietrelcinaFrancesco Forgione was born on May 25th 1887 in Pietrelcina, a farming town in the southern Italian region of Campania from a very poor family. In 1903, at the age of 15, he entered the novitiate of the Capuchin Friars and took the Franciscan habit and the name of Fra (Brother) Pio. He took the simple vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Some years later he made his solemn profession, and on August 10th 1910, in the Benevento Cathedral, he was consecrated as a priest. In 1918 Padre Pio was kneeling in front of a large crucifix when he received the visible marks of the crucifixion, making him the first stigmatized priest in the history of the Church. The news of the stigmata travelled all over the world and suddenly San Giovanni Rotondo became a pilgrimage destination for thousands of people hoping to obtain remedies for physical and psychological illness. The wounds of the stigmata were not the only mystical phenomenon experienced by Padre Pio, the blood having an odour described by many as similar to that of perfume or flowers, and the gift of bilocation was attributed to him. Padre Pio had the ability to read the hearts of the penitents who flocked to him for confession which he heard for ten or twelve hours per day, using the confessional to bring both sinners and devout souls closer to God; he would know just the right word of counsel or encouragement that was needed. Among the many stories of bilocation that took place is that of Luigi Orione, according to whom in 1925, while he was in Piazza San Pietro for the celebration of Teresa of Lisieux, Padre Pio suddenly and unexpectedly appeared to him, whereas in fact he had not moved from the convent that cared for him until his death. St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina died on September 23rd 1968, the day after his last Mass. His body now rests peacefully in San Giovanni Rotondo, in a crypt in the Santa Maria delle Grazie Church. Over 100,000 people attended his funeral. On September 27th 1968 his crypt was opened for the first time and since then a continuous stream of believers has come to pay their respects to this marvellous icon. The process that led to his sanctification began in 1982 with the nihil obstat. In 1990 Padre Pio was proclaimed venerable, and was beatified on May 2nd 1999 and proclaimed a saint on June 16th 2002 in Piazza San Pietro by Pope John Paul II as San Pio da Pietrelcina. Francesco Forgione nacque il 25 maggio 1887 a Pietrelcina, un piccolo comune del sud Italia, in Campania, da una famiglia umile. Nel , all'et di 15 anni, entr nel noviziato dei Frati Minori Cappuccini assumendo il nome di "fra' Pio". Concluso l'anno del noviziato, formul i voti semplici di povert, castit e obbedienza e qualche anno pi tardi rese pubblica la professione dei voti solenni, legandosi cos all'ordine fino alla morte. Dopo aver ricevuto l'ordine del diaconato, nel noviziato di Morcone (BN), fu consacrato sacerdote il 10 agosto 1910 nel Duomo di Benevento. Nel 1918 sostenne di aver avuto la prima apparizione di stigmate che scomparir solo in puto di morte, il 23 settembre 1968 (piaghe sanguinolente alle mani, ai piedi ed al costato, che ai credenti richiamano le lesioni di Ges morto crocifisso): la notizia della comparsa delle stigmate fece il giro del mondo e repentinamente San Giovanni Rotondo fu meta di pellegrinaggio da parte di persone speranzose di ottenerne sanificazione di malattie fisiche e psichiche. La popolarit di Padre Pio e di San Giovanni Rotondo crebbero grazie al passaparola. Allo stesso tempo cominciarono a circolare voci secondo le quali il suo corpo aveva cominciato ad emanare un curioso profumo di gelsomino.Il 22 settembre alle cinque del mattino Padre Pio celebr la sua ultima messa e il giorno dopo mor serenamente pronunciando le parole "Ges e Maria". Ai suoi solenni funerali parteciparono oltre centomila persone. Il 27 settembre 1968 venne aperta ai fedeli la cripta che custodiva il suo corpo e inizi da allora un pellegrinaggio ininterrotto di fedeli alla sua tomba. Il procedimento che port alla canonizzazione, ebbe inizio con il nihil obstat del 1982. Nel 1990 Padre Pio venne proclamato venerabile, fu beatificato il 2 maggio 1999 e proclamato santo il 16 giugno 2002 in piazza San Pietro da Papa Giovanni Paolo II come San Pio da Pietrelcina. Tra i segni miracolosi che gli vengono attribuiti troviamo le "stigmate" che port per 50 anni (1918-1968), il dono della bilocazione e della capacit di leggere nei cuori e nella mente delle persone. Tra i molti miracoli che gli vengono attribuiti c' quello della guarigione del piccolo Matteo Pio Colella di San Giovanni Rotondo, sul quale stato celebrato il processo canonico che ha portato poi alla elevazione agli altari di San Pio. Tra i tanti racconti di bilocazione che lo avrebbero visto protagonista c' quello fornito da Luigi Orione, secondo il quale nel 1925, mentre si trovava in piazza San Pietro per i festeggiamenti in onore di Teresa di Lisieux, gli sarebbe apparso inaspettatamente Padre Pio da Pietrelcina, che in realt non si mosse mai dal convento che lo ospitava dal 1918 sino alla morte.morte.
