Lot 167: 1978 Ferrari 308GTS

Ferrari’s line of highly successful V8-engined road cars began with the 308GT4 of 1973. Originally badged as a ‘Dino’, the all-new 308GT4 2+2 replaced the preceding Dino V6. The newcomer’s wedge-shaped styling - by Bertone rather than the customary Pininfarina - was not universally well received, but the performance of the amidships-mounted double-overhead-camshaft 3-litre V8 certainly was, the latter’s 236bhp proving sufficient to propel the 308 to over 150mph. A new two-seater car using a dry-sumped, 255bhp version of the same power unit debuted at the Paris Salon in 1975. Built on a shorter wheelbase, the stunningly beautiful 308GTB marked a welcome return to Pininfarina styling. Developments included the introduction in 1977 of an open-top GTS version with Targa-style removable roof, the adoption of Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection (1980) and, finally, revised cylinder heads with four valves per cylinder (1982).

Sold new in Turin, Italy, this left-hand drive 308GTS remained in its first owner’s hands for only a few months before passing to its second, who kept the car from 1978 to 2006. Finished in red with black interior, the car comes complete with full tool kit and benefits from new brakes, air conditioning, cam belts, exhaust system and servicing by Autofficina Pertile of Sanremo (details available). Offered for sale by the ex-President of the Dino Register in Italy, it comes with roadworthiness certificate and Italian libretto. No reserve.

Vendue neuve à Turin, en Italie, cette 308GTS à conduite à gauche n'est restée que quelques mois aux mains de son premier propriétaire avant d'être cédée au deuxième qui l'a conservée de 1978 à 2006. Peinte en rouge avec intérieur noir, la voiture, complète avec son outillage de bord, a bénéficié d'une réfection des freins, de l'air conditionné, des courroies de distribution, de l'échappement et d'un entretien par Autofficina Pertile de Sanremo (détails disponibles).
