Lot 122: Jaguar XJS Convertible
Jaguar Heritage + Classic & Collectors Motor Cars, Barons (29th April 2008)
The XJS was the saviour of Jaguar cars. Remaining in production for 20 years, the model suffered from comparisons with the E-Type during the early years but the model was never meant to be an E-Type replacement but a Grand Touring Car, which was a roll it carried out magnificently. The early, pre HE, V12 suffered from oil crisis jitters but this was addressed in the early 80's with the HE V12 engine, which utilised the Michael May "Fireball" head. This engine, together with a 2.88-1 final drive made the V12 XJS into a super touring car with very long legs and a possible 25mpg, if driven sensibly, There was, quite surprisingly, no convertible XJS for over 13 years. It was not until 1988 that a fully convertible version appeared, after much pressure from the American market. The model was an instant hit and remained in production up until 1995, when it was replaced by the XK8. Offered here is a 1990 example of the factory convertible, which is said, by the vendor, to have been the subject of over 7000 worth of mechanical and cosmetic works over the past 5 years. The car has benefited from anti corrosion treatment, which has kept the bodywork in reasonable shape, while the interior has been regularly treated with leather food. The cooling system has been overhauled and has new hoses throughout and the engine shows manufactures oil pressure of 45/5-llbs at 3000rpm. Finished in Signal Red with magnolia leather, the car is described as being in good to fair condition cosmetically and mechanically sound. It is offered complete with invoices for the works, original handbooks, radio, toolkit and hood cover, plus a numbers of spares, which include spare Kevlar HT leads, window motor and actuator, central ski slope (switch panel) and a JDHT parts catalogue.
