Lot 022: 1975 MERCEDES-BENZ 450 SL

Launched in 1971, the W107-series SL was beautifully engineered. Notably rigid for a convertible, its two-door monocoque shell was equipped with all round independent suspension, power assisted steering and four-wheel disc brakes. Lauded by the contemporary motoring press for its performance and refinement, the W107's avant garde yet elegant styling resulted in an eighteen year production run. Powered by a 4,520cc V8 unit mated to automatic transmission, this particular example is described by the vendor as being "all very good" with regard to its engine, gearbox, chassis, electrical equipment, paintwork, bodywork, interior trim and wheels / tyres. Finished in two-tone green with cream hide upholstery, it is said to have had "only two previous keepers" one of whom reputedly put it into dry storage for fifteen years. In the "present ownership for approximately nine years" during which time "ú1000s have been spent on restoration" (including new seat coverings), it is believed but not warranted to have covered just 64,000 miles from new. Benefiting from both hard- and soft-top roofs (the former retaining its stand and the latter being new), it is offered for sale with a "stamped service book", MOT certificate valid until March 2006 and road tax current until February 2006.
