Lot 209: 1954 MG TF 1250

Coys Auction, Coys (27th February 2007)

1954 MG TF 1250
MG's Midget range, which had begun with the M-type of 1928, had proven a runaway success that found favour with enthusiasts on and off the track on both sides of the Atlantic. The first post-war Midget had been the TC and the wider-bodied TD that replaced it was again similar, albeit with a new box section chassis. Braking was also improved with twin rather than single leading shoe drums while smaller disc type wheels replaced the previous wires, the lower overall gearing accommodated by the wider ratios of the four speed Y-Type gearbox. The MG TF first appeared at the 1953 Motor Show and was the ideal successor to the TD. A more refined car than the TD, it featured a sloping bonnet line and radiator, headlights grafted into the wings, sharply raked tail and individual bucket seats to replace the previous bench type fitted to the TD. These considerable cosmetic improvements were coupled with an uprated 1,250cc power unit. This example is described by the vendor as being in excellent condition throughout. It has had just 3 owners from new, the present custodian looking after the vehicle since 1979. With 6,500 miles driven since a comprehensive chassis-up rebuild including new timber throughout, new aluminium door panels and absolutely no filler anywhere this really is a totally straight example. The engine and gearbox has also been completely rebuilt and benefits from a lead-free conversion. The soft top and tonneau is a double duck unit. The majority of the works undertaken were done at Brown and Gammons of Baldock between 1988 and 1989 with over £17,000 spent during that period. Also included is a heater, a non-standard factory extra and a welcome addition to the year round motoring this car deserves. UPG 718 was overhauled by Horam Classic Restorations in East Sussex late last year with over £4,000 spent on new leaf springs, front suspension and breaks. Sundry electrical work was also carried out including a new clutch, new gearbox cogs and shafts. With bills totalling over £25,000 stretching back over the years and an MoT until May 2007 and garaging consisting of a centrally heated and humidity controlled garage, this must surely represent one of the finest T-series MG's available for sale in the county today. Also available by private treaty is a further TF engine, crown wheel, pinion and other sundry spares.
