Lot 25: Lincoln Continental Convertible
Sale of Classic and Collectors' Motor Vehicles, BCA (19th February 2007)
Like most American cars, when production recommenced following WW II in 1946, the Lincoln range comprised updated pre-war models. They were highly regarded for their styling and the Continental of that era, with its egg-crate grille, achieved the rare 'instant classic' accolade. A pet project of Edsel Ford, the Continental first broke cover in 1939, going into production for the 1940 season, and became a separate model from the Zephyr the following year. Originally featuring a 'waterfall' style, a major face-lift was applied for 1942, the last year of pre-war production, with larger bumpers, more pronounced wings and a horizontally barred grille with upper and lower elements. Completing this were the restyled headlamp surrounds, incorporating rectangular sidelights and a restyled rear. Post-war, the '42 model was reintroduced, albeit now with a further revised grille featuring horizontal and vertical elements and additional chrome embellishments. This '46 model Continental was to continue for the next three seasons with little but minor trim details distinguishing each model year. All the Continentals were powered by Lincoln's 'flathead' V-12 and for post-war production the long-wheelbase was dropped in favour of the standard 125-inch for all body styles. The 1947 example offered here was imported by the vendor, having been purchased in Geneva during 1999, and is finished in metallic maroon with a black hood and interior. Subsequently used for various events, shows, etc., it is reported to have always given very reliable service and to have attracted considerable attention. As the vendor's collection grew, the car enjoyed less frequent outings and has spent the last few years in dry storage, though a regular maintenance programme has ensured it remained in good order. It will be recommissioned before it is delivered for this sale. Although dusty and poorly lit when viewed, it appears cosmetically good throughout, with the exception of a couple of minor blemishes, and we are assured it is sound throughout. With little more than 700 Continental Convertibles produced for the 1947 model year, this is one of very few cars that found their way to Europe and is believed to be possibly the only one extant in the UK. Documentation provided will include a V5 document.
