Lot 205: 1961 Lotus 61 Formula Ford 1600 Single Seater
Porsche and Lotus Motor Cars, Bonhams (26th July 2008)
Lotus was one of the first major manufacturers of racing cars to embrace the new Formula Ford after its inception in 1967. Intended as a low-cost introduction to ‘proper’ motor racing, Formula Ford required relatively inexpensive cars that were easy for the novice to maintain. In line with these requirements, the Lotus 61 was an entirely conventional design by the standards of the day, being constructed around a multi-tube steel spaceframe with wishbone suspension all round. It was one of a number of Lotus formula car designs of this period to feature wedge-shaped bodywork, an innovation first seen on the Type 56 Indianapolis car.
An ex-Jim Russell race school car, this Lotus 61 has been in the hands of the current owner - an enthusiastic member of the BRDC - for the past 30-or-so years and during that time has competed in a only a handful of sprints, hill climbs and races. The car has been subject to a full restoration, including new glassfibre bodywork, and the space frame chassis likewise has been fully rebuilt. The engine is presented in fresh condition, having been rebuilt within the past five years, though the car has not been used in anger since. Offered for sale in ‘on the button’ condition, this Lotus 61 offers easy entry into a multitude of historic racing events for only a relatively modest outlay.
