Lot 365: 1952 Jaguar XK120 4.2-Litre Coupé

International Historic Motorsport Show, Bonhams (25th February 2006)

1952 Jaguar XK120 4.2-Litre Coupé
Delays in the gestation of its MkVII saloon led to Jaguar exploring an alternative method of bringing its new ‘XK’ engine to public attention. The result was the XK120 sports car. Launched at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show, the stunning-looking roadster caused a sensation. Conceived as a low-volume model, the XK120 proved considerably more popular than expected, with the result that the expensive, ash-framed alloy coachwork was replaced by steel after 240 cars had been completed.
Although it had not been designed with racing in mind, the XK120’s competition potential was immediately obvious, not least to the factory, which entered a three-car team in the Daily Express one-hour race for standard production cars at Silverstone in August 1949. The XK’s of Leslie Johnson and Peter Walker duly rewarded Jaguar’s faith in its new sportscar by finishing first and second respectively, thus setting the scene for an illustrious competition career that would culminate in the development of the legendary C-Type.
Delivered new in North America, this XK120 fixed-head coupé was subsequently converted to right-hand drive and modified to provide high-speed motoring in the modern manner. A Jaguar XK 4.2-litre engine coupled to a four-speed, all-synchro, overdrive gearbox has greatly improved its performance, which is kept in check by a handling kit (including Koni shock absorbers and stiffer anti-roll bar) and all round disc brakes. The car is finished in Ecurie Ecosse-style dark blue with grey leather interior, while 15” chromed wire wheels, Le Mans’ filler cap, alloy over-riders and louvered bonnet complete with straps further emphasise this car’s sporting potential. Purchased to compete in touring and rallying events, it has recently been treated to a thorough ‘engine out’ service by Mill Lane Engineering and comes with a detailed list of the work carried out. Regretfully offered for sale due to a change of circumstances, the car comes with EU duties paid and is ready for registration.
