Lot 101: Mercedes-Benz 350SL

The Mercedes SL dates back to the 300SLR look-a-like 190 of the nineteen fifties but the most influential SL was the Pagoda, which replaced the 190 in 1963. The clever hood mechanism and factory hard top gave this model a wide appeal. With the "Pagoda" hard top in place, one could be excused for believing one was riding in a fixed head coupe, but with the hood retracted into its stowage space, the car had beautifully uncluttered lines. The SL was updated in 1971 but the new car borrowed heavily from the "Pagoda". Though bigger and heavier, the new car managed to retain the classic looks and the model continued to be the choice of the rich and famous. It was rare to see an episode of Dallas or Dynasty without an SL making an appearance. Offered here is a mid-era 350SL of 1979 vintage, which is said to be in good condition with a little tlc required. Finished in Fern Green metallic with cream MB Tex interior with cloth inserts, the car is said to drive well and is offered with an MoT through to April 2009. These SL's were solidly built and now offer classic Mercedes Al Fresco motoring at an outstanding price.
