Lot 304: Porsche 356C Convertible

Exceptional Motorcars and related Memorabilia, Bonhams & Butterfields (14th August 2009)

Built in a long run of basic, A and B models from 1948, Porsche's perennial 356 made its final transformation with the Type 6 body in 1963. Designated 356C, it had a new ZF steering gear and a compensating spring at the rear to calm the swing axle suspension. Four-wheel disc brakes were also part of the revision, and a 12-volt electrical system became available. Two 1,600cc engines were offered, the C version with 75hp DIN (European horsepower (rated 88hp by SAE), and the SC with higher compression and counterweighted crankshaft making 95hp DIN (107hp SAE). Most powerful was the four-cam Carrera 2, which displaced 1,966cc and was rated at 130hp DIN (145hp SAE). Porsche popularity soared, and more than 10,000 cars for 1964 bested the company's total over its first decade. However, the new 911 model was introduced in July, presaging the phase-out of the 356. Regular production finally ended in September 1965, by which time all 356s were being shipped to the United States. More than 78,000 had been built, of which half are estimated to survive. The Porsche 356 enjoyed much success in racing and rallying, including competition in the 24 hours of Le Mans, the Mille Miglia, the Targa Florio, and the Carrera Panamericana. This 1964 356C cabriolet has been well cared for, and is attractive in white paint with contrasting black top and interior. The interior exhibits black carpeted kick panels and a black rubber floor mat. The wood-rimmed steering wheel is highly varnished. It runs and drives extremely well, and exhibits open-air motoring at its best. Indicated mileage is under 70,000 and believed to be original. The body, like most Porsche cabriolets, is by Reutter of Stuttgart. The relationship between the two firms dated to the early 1930s, and was renewed after World War II when Porsche returned from Austria to Germany. The US had occupied Porsche's plants, so Reutter leased space for 356 production, a symbiotic relationship that benefited both companies. The 356 cabriolet is the archetypal Porsche. This is a chance to acquire an excellent example.
