Lot 073: Rover 60 P4
Brightwells Classic Car Auction, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (11th July 2007)
Incredibly strong, smooth and comfortable, the Rover P4 is one of the best made cars ever to be mass produced on these shores. Produced from 1949 until 1964, it came in a bewildering number of versions but all were excellent cars furnished to a very high standard with plenty of wood and leather. Despite strong sales for its six-cylinder P4 75 model, Rover felt there was a market for a smaller, four-cylinder P4 model. So in 1953 the Rover 60 was added to the range, using the same 1,997cc petrol engine as in the recently launched Land Rover. As with the rest of the P4 range, the 60 used a separate chassis and a substantial four door saloon body. The interior trim and external brightwork were to the same high standards as the other six cylinder cars. First registered in March 1959, this lovely little Rover 60 has had just three owners from new, the last of whom has owned it for over 30 years (though for certain personal reasons it was signed over to a friend for a few years in the late 1980s early 1990s). Said to be totally original and unrestored, the 30,000 miles on the clock is further said to be the genuine distance covered from new.Still in exceptional and beautifully patinated condition throughout, it is said to drive perfectly. It comes with a modern V5, original buff log book, many old MOTs back to 1981 and original owner's manual, service manual and workshop manual. This must surely be one of the finest, most original P4s in existence.
