Lot 126: Jaguar 420 Saloon
Classic Cars, Barons (12th December 2006)
Based on the S-Type, the 420 had a much revised frontal treatment, which was more MKX than S-Type and gave some clues to the styling of the upcoming XJ6, which would usurp the 420 after only two years in production. This short production run means that the 420 is the rarest Jaguar saloon of the modern era, with only 9810 examples built in both right and left hand drive. An example with manual transmission is extremely rare. This 1967 example is equipped with the factory option of a manual+ overdrive gearbox, as denoted by the DN suffix to the chassis number. It is said to have been dry stored for a number of years until acquired by the vendor in May of this year, when it was given to renowned Jaguar specialists Swallow Engineering to be recommissioned. Swallow went through the car replacing hoses, fuel pumps, tyres and mechanical parts as they were required. A copy of the invoice from Swallow is included in the history file. Not only is this a rare manual example, it is also finished in a rare colour combination of black with red leather. Black Jaguars are a rare sight but do look stunning with the contrasting chromework, especially when they are equipped with chrome wire wheels, as is this example. The vendor describes the car as being in good to very good order. The car has an MoT through to June 2007 and historic tax through to May 2007.This means that, insurance allowing, you can drive this 420 home.
