Lot 323: 1969 Lotus Elan S4 SE Drophead

Extensive history with this matching numbers Elan S4 SE, first supplied by Victor Raysbrook Motors, contains receipts in 26 folders from 1969, from when various changes of ownership are recorded. A run of MOTs from 1972 to 2006 accurately charts annual mileages and confirms a 134,480 total when entered. Apart from latest V5C and old tax discs, the latest expiring 31/10/07, also included are original warranty certificate and owner’s handbook from Lotus Cars, 1992 reprint of factory workshop manual, and books on Twin Cam engine rebuilding and maintenance as well as Elan restoration. As with many Elans, which were converted from fixed head to drophead both by the Wymondham factory itself or by Lotus dealers in period, and confirmed by a dated receipt on file, 459575 has been an open-sports since 1972 at least and most likely from new. A current MOT would appear to back up the soundness of the back-bone chassis claimed. Following some refurbishment to GRP body and paintwork 1997/98, the gel-coat appears to be in reasonable order and the repaint in yellow from then fair with some stone chips. While seat fabric and carpets have been renewed and stainless steel exhaust fitted, the off-side door electric window motor is declared to be slow and the fuel gauge requires attention. Hood, tonneau, jack and knock-on/off hammer are present. When catalogued, engine oil pressure when warm indicated 12lbs at idling and 40lbs when running, and transmission worked well. Although a sound candidate for a full makeover or race/rally car donor, this open Elan, driven to Stoneleigh, can at least be enjoyed immediately and renovated in stages.
