Lot 407: 1969 Ford Mustang Fastback Mach 1 351 M Code
Fine Motor Cars, Coys (5th July 2008)
The Ford Mustang was introduced in 1964 as a sporty 'pony car' to attract younger buyers to Ford products. After only a few short years of development, Ford saw the need to create performance Mustangs to compete with General Motors and its release of the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird. While several performance options had existed in the form of factory 289cu in/4.7 litre models (from 1965 onwards) and factory FE code engines (new for 1968), the vast majority of the Ford Mustang's performance mantle was carried by cars modified by the legendary Carroll Shelby. 1969, however, would be the benchmark year for Ford Mustang in its proliferation of performance names and engines. The model name Mach 1 could not have been more appropriate; in 1969 Performance Buyer's Digest put a new Mach 1 through its paces at Bonneville, breaking some 295 USAC speed and endurance records. Ford kept the Mach 1 alive into 1970 and little changed. Outselling the base GT model, Ford cancelled the GT altogether to make the Mach 1 the primary road-going performance Mustang. Described as being in good condition, this 351 M code Mustang Mach 1 is supplied with a V5 registration document and a MoT certificate valid until April 2009. Imported from the America a number of years ago, it is also supplied with all British and European taxes paid. Finished in blue, this car is fitted with several factory visual and performance enhancing items such as matt black bonnet and optional spoiler, bonnet pins, chromed petrol cap and a chin spoiler. In contrast to the blue paintwork, the interior is fitted with white seats and a black dashboard with wood inserts. Power is fed to the road via an automatic gearbox and power assisted steering makes the driving experience that little bit easier. A great opportunity to purchase a fine example of this iconic American muscle car.
