Lot 647: 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Convertible
Sports, Competition & Collectors' Motor Cars, Bonhams (24th June 2005)
The last of a popular and extremely successful line begun with the 230SL of 1963, the Mercedes-Benz 280SL was introduced in 1967. Although similar in basic, seven-main-bearing, architecture to that of the preceding 250SL, the 280’s overhead-camshaft six-cylinder engine was entirely new. Despite its having to meet more exacting emissions requirements, maximum power output of the Bosch fuel-injected type M130 unit was up from 150 to 180bhp, and while the 280SL’s 190km/h-plus (118mph) top speed was no greater, it was significantly quicker off the mark than the 250, its 0-100km/h (0-62mph) time of 10 seconds being a whole second better than its predecessor’s. Otherwise the 280SL remained mechanically virtually identical to the 250SL, with independent suspension all round and four-wheel disc brakes. Christened ‘pagoda top’ after their distinctive cabin shape, these SL models were amongst the best-loved sports-tourers of their day and remain highly sought after by collectors.
This right-hand drive, automatic transmission example comes with a complete list of previous owners and service bills stretching back to 1971, as well as a quantity of old MoTs, all of which - we are advised - appear to verify the recorded mileage of circa 86,000 miles. The vehicle was supplied new via Cruickshank’s of Bristol, who reconditioned the engine in 1977 and fitted a new gearbox in 1989. Following a period in storage during the 1990s, the car was treated to bodywork renovation and a bare-metal re-spray in 2004. The private vendor describes the car’s cosmetic condition as excellent in every respect, even down to the engine bay and boot floor. Finished in Horizon Blue with matching interior, the vehicle is offered with owner’s manuals, restoration invoices, Mercedes-Benz dating letter, current MoT and Swansea V5.
