Lot 269: 1988 Porsche 959 Coupe
Légende et Passion, Coys (20th May 2006)
In the mid 1980s manufacturers vied with each other to build Group B rally cars which all were mid-engined 'saloons', with four wheel drive, turbo charged engines, bespoke chassis, composite bodies, and only two seats. Since the idea was to promote the manufacturers most of these cars attempted to look at least like the half-sister of the hatchbacks they were supposed to be promoting, even if they had massive wheel arches and aerofoils. The engine is a 2.9 litre flat-six with water-cooled d.o.h.c. 'four valve' heads and twin KKK turbochargers, which delivers its 450 bhp through a six-speed transaxle allied to a permanent four wheel drive system. Even in 'comfort' trim (with air conditioning) it is capable of over 190 mph and 0-62 mph in 3.7 seconds. Everyone who has driven one of these fabulous cars reaches for superlatives. You can drive it to the office, yet it performs, and feels, like a thoroughbred racing car. You can cause heads to turn outside the Casino in Monte Carlo yet drive it off-road - Rene Metger won the 1984 and 1986 Paris-Dakar Rallies in a 959. This Porsche 959 is one of only 200 made by the factory and has a recorded mileage of approximately 42,000 kms. It comes with a full service history with appropriate stamped service book. Its last service, to include the fitting of a complete new brake system and new tyres was completed at a mileage of 40,257 kms by Porsche Zentrum Dsseldorf abt. The car has also a new Pioneer CD stereo system fitted, the works Blaupunkt wireless is available and is provided with the car. All keys including the key for the alert system are available as is expert evidence showing a value of 250,000 Euros for this German Supercar. Further documentation includes the original sales invoice by Porsche Stuttgart dated 2.11.87 and the German KFZ Brief. Being driven some 1200 kms by its owner from Germany to this auction, this superb and rare vehicle is expected to increase in value in the future.
