Lot 317: 1964 Iso Rivolta IR 340GT

Iso SpA of Milan was famous as the originator of the Isetta 'Bubble' car. This was the first and best of these miniature cars, and was built under licence in France, England and Germany. The company's next great design took a huge leap in both size and engine capacity, the latter increasing from 232cc to 5,359cc! Together with Jensen, Gordon Keeble, Facel Vega and others, Iso followed the sensible and popular fashion of the period in uniting a reliable and powerful American engine with a well thought-out chassis, the result clothed in high quality European coachwork. Launched in 1962 the Rivolta chassis, designed by the brilliant Giotto Bizzarrini, featured front suspension using unequal length wishbones with inclined coil springs and at the rear a de Dion axle also using coil springs; specially designed aircraft type shock absorbers were fitted all round. A 300bhp Chevrolet Turbofire V8 engine supplied the power, whilst Dunlop discs front and rear provided braking to match. This enticing combination was then clothed with a pretty coupé body penned by Italian design studio. In the same ownership since 1973, this extremely rare Rivolta 340 GT sports saloon was comprehensively restored last year. Delivered new to America and recently imported to Italy, it is supplied with a quantity of correspondence to and from the Iso works, assorted invoices and photographs of the car prior to restoration. Presented in red with cream leather interior and fitted with automatic transmission, this stylish and fast four seater, complete with all European taxes paid, is described as being in stunning and perfect condition.
