Lot 119: Mercedes-Benz 280SE Coupe
Classic - Collectors and Historic Motor Cars, Barons (12th February 2008)
The "Fintail" or Heckflosse in German was the nickname given to a series of luxury cars produced by Mercedes-Benz from the late 1950s to the late-1960s under the W111 chassis code. Though never officially designated as a fintail, the cars gained the nickname because of the distinctive rear-end which incorporates small tail fins, thought to be an understated attempt to appeal to the United States market. The fins were far less pronounced and softened on the later "S" version in Coupe and Convertible form. The Fintail is part of the Mercedes lineage of the S-Class flagship model, particularly the initial 6-cylinder W111 and more luxurious W112 models.Offered here is a 1969 vintage 280SE Coupe in left-hand-drive configuration, which has been imported from the USA. The car has been subjected to a UK MoT test and has a certificate through to January 2009. The vendor also states that the car has been fully serviced since importation and is mechanically excellent.Finished in metallic silver with excellent blue leather interior, the car is described as being an excellent, usable example, requiring only minor cosmetics. It is equipped with, working, air conditioning, electric windows, electric aerial and the original Blue Spot "Becker" stereo. The car will require registering in the UK, a simple task costing just 50, but is offered with all duties and VAT paid.
