Lot 217: 1964 Porsche 356C Coupé
Porsche Motor Cars and related Automobilia, Bonhams (27th July 2007)
The ultimate expression of a famous line, this right-hand drive Porsche 356C Coupé has seen very little use over the past 23 years, having been kept garaged, unused, for ten-or-so of those years. The vehicle was purchased as a gift for the present owner at Bonhams’ Sale at the RAF Museum, Hendon on 26th April 2004 (Lot 677). At that time it was recorded that the car had been stripped completely in 1999 and treated to a full body re-spray; at the same time, the underside was blast-cleaned and coated with 3M plastic protector and the door and heater channels wax-injected. The vendor at that time (2004) had owned the car since 1999, covering approximately 200 miles per year in it prior to sale.
‘EGF 178B’s present owner is the wife of a well-known historic car collector and competitor; she has not been able to use her Porsche much, hence the reason for sale. While in the current ownership the car has been kept in a de-humidified garage. Recent works undertaken include a full brake refurbishment (including rebuilt calipers) and the fitting of an up-rated (to SC specification) engine supplied by BM Competition of Weichering-Lichtenau, Germany. The engine has been built to mild rally specification with new crankcases; rebuilt and balanced crankshaft; lightened flywheel; ‘high-torque’ camshaft; Mahle pistons in 1,700cc cylinders; rebuilt cylinder heads incorporating new valves, guides and seats; rebuilt Zenith carburettors, etc. A new 6-volt battery has been fitted and a new Carrera-style exhaust system is available with the car, while we are advised that the engine is still running in. Finished in Porsche Silver with original black interior, the latter retaining its original radio, the car is offered with current MoT and Swansea V5 registration document.
