Lot 25: Austin Healey 3000 MkI
Classic Cars and Bikes, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (21st March 2007)
Launched in 1959, the new Austin-Healey 3000 (Mk I) introduced a number of improvements to the already successful 100-6. The change of model name heralded the more powerful 2,912cc BMC C-Series engine whose 124bhp propelled the car to a top speed of nearly 120mph.Other improvements included front disc brakes, wire wheels as standard, and a choice of either 2 seater (BN7) or 2+2 (BT7) body styles. Options included a detachable hardtop roof and overdrive transmission. The 3000 Mk I remained in production until the arrival of the MkII in 1961.First registered in 1959 and still on it's original, transferable number plates, this Austin-Healey 3000 MkI is said to be in good, useable condition throughout. Restored in 1980, it comes with a fair amount of history going back to that date plus a Heritage Certificate confirming that it is an original UK car.The chassis is said to be dead straight and to show no signs of previous damage. The engine is said to be very strong and lively with excellent oil pressure and no smoke, while the handling and general driving dynamics are also described as very good. The car benefits from the desirable overdrive gearbox option which also functions as it should. Soft top and side screens come with the car but there is no tonneau cover or hard top. With a long MOT and due to be driven 70 miles to the sale, this highly usable car only needs a bit of cosmetic detailing here and there to turn it into a very tidy machine indeed. Altogether a good opportunity to acquire a sound example of one of the most charismatic British sports cars at a very realistic guide price.
