Lot 35: Austin-Healey 3000 MK III PHASE 2
Classic & Historic Automobile, BCA (2nd October 2007)
During 1959, the Austin-Healey 100/6 received the enlarged version of the BMC 'C' Series engine, giving a useful increase in power. Now designated '3000', the 'Big Healey' initially retained the same body style as its predecessor before being redeveloped into the sports convertible style from the Mk IIA series onwards. 1964 was to see the appearance of the final series the Mk III. Now boasting 150bhp and servo brakes along with a more lavish interior, contemporary road tests showed a maximum speed of 120mph with acceleration from 0-60 being accomplished in 9 seconds. The interior of the later cars boasted a wood veneer dash and the cockpit generally was of a higher specification than before.A 1967 example of the Mk III Phase 2, this motor car is understood to have been imported to the UK in the early 1990s and to have been the subject of considerable restoration which included converting it to right-hand-drive. Finished in British Racing green over Ivory, it is of fine appearance and benefits from wire wheels and overdrive transmission. A stainless steel exhaust system has been fitted, as has a luggage rack a welcome addition when touring. One of the most charismatic sports cars of its period, the 'Big Healey' has always enjoyed a devoted following and is a delight to own. Since completion of the restoration work, the car has been sparingly used and we are advised that the engine was rebuilt around four years ago.
