Lot 176: 1953 HMW 38cc Foxinette
Professor Fritz Ehn Motorcycle Museum Collection, Bonhams (30th June 2008)
The Austrian HMW (Halleiner Motorenwerke) company was a major engine supplier to the country’s infant post-war two-wheeler industry. Post-1950 it also began to make its own machines, starting with an innovative moped, the ‘Foxinette’. Constructed around a beam frame that doubled as the petrol tank, with the rotary-valve, two-stroke engine suspended beneath. At the front, suspension was by a pre-war-style, central-spring girder fork. This most economical model was produced for a comparatively short time and thus is rare today. Coming straight from display in the museum, this ‘Foxinette’ is in very good condition with original paint and transfers. Almost a cyclemotor, it represents a vanished style of ultra-light transport and as such will be of interest to many.
