Lot 209: 1968 Mercedes-Benz 250 C
Auto Moto D'Epoca, Coys (27th October 2007)
Mercedes-Benz coupes have always offered a particular blend of comfort, refinement and performance and the W114 range introduced in 1968 was no exception. Available in either 250 or 280 CE guise, the cars shared the chassis of the outgoing W108 series but with new two door pillar-less coupe coachwork with a low roofline. Underneath, the all independent suspension remained as before, i.e.; wishbone/coil spring at the front and a coil sprung swing axle at the rear, while the all round disc brakes were both larger and uprated to cope with the extra performance that was provided by either the familiar single overhead camshaft, 2,496cc straight six engine or a new 2,746cc version with twin overhead camshafts. Both were available either as carburettor or Bosch electronic fuel injection models, indicated by the E for Einspritzung (injection) in the model name. Although the coupé was the same length as the saloon, being identical from the A-pillar forward, the passenger compartment was 19 inches shorter, the roof was two inches lower and the boot was considerably longer. It also had a more elegant rear window reminiscent of the 'pagoda' SLs and chrome strips down each side of the roof, while the pillar-less design allowed the windows to be completely wound down, an ideal feature for summer motoring. This early 1968 model is attractively finished in beige with a contrasting dark brown MB-Tex interior. It is very rare indeed as power is transmitted via the desirable manual gearbox rather than through the three speed automatic unit more commonly fitted to these luxury coupes. According to the owner the car is in good condition throughout and represents a great opportunity to purchase an affordable classic Mercedes-Benz, the three-pointed star of which is certain to rise again.Questa particolare auto e rifinito in beige con gli interni in marrone scuro MB Tex. L'auto si vanta del raro trasmissione manuale. Il proprietario ci informa che la vettura si trova in buoni condizioni in generale.
