Lot 239: 1969 Dodge Charger R/T 440
AutoSport 2008, Coys (12th January 2008)
In order to further boost the Dodge Charger's muscle car image, a new high-performance package was developed the thus the respected R/T moniker was born. This stood for 'Road/Track' and as it would be used as the high performance badge that would establish Dodge's performance image it was applied only to the highest performance models. The Charger R/T came in standard specification with the previous year's 440 Magnum engine with the 426 Hemi being optional. In 1969 not much was changed for the popular Charger: exterior changes included a new grille with a central divider and new longitudinal taillights, both designed by Harvey J. Winn; the bumble bee stripes returned as well but were changed slightly, now featuring one huge stripe framed by two smaller stripes instead of four stripes, while either an R/T cut-out or emblem was placed in the middle of the largest stripe. Total production for the year dropped slightly to around 85,680 units. This particular example is a rare original red on red example manufactured in 1969. The engine is bored out to 440 cubic inches and features new pistons, oil pump, competition camshafts and valves allied to a Holley 750 polished carburettor and a full three inch bore Summit aluminium exhaust system; since its ground-up rebuild it has covered only 50 miles. The gearbox has also been overhauled while the body, the floor and boot of which are rust-free, has benefited from a recent re-spray and a new white vinyl roof, and the seat covers, carpets, headlining and centre console have all been replaced. Underneath, new steering components and four new gas shock absorbers are other recent fitments. Imported into Great Britain in early 2007, with all taxes paid and accompanied by an American Certificate of Title, this car is in excellent condition all round, indeed it is perhaps one of the best examples on the market.
