Lot 234: 1967 Ferrari 330GTC Coupé

Les Grandes Marques a Monaco, Bonhams (16th May 2005)

1967 Ferrari 330GTC Coupé
Although Ferrari’s 330GTC, launched for the 1966 season, was an amalgam of various models, it was nevertheless a Ferrari masterpiece, the visionary technical design team collaborating closely with Pininfarina to produce a coupé of elegant lines and with stunning performance. Ferrari’s 275GTB had run with significant success at Le Mans in 1965, winning the GT class, and it was that chassis with all-independent suspension and a five-speed transaxle that was adopted for the new 330GTC. Disc brakes were fitted all round and the rear mounted transaxle gave the chassis fine balance.

The 330GTC took its 4 litre engine from the 400 Superamerica’s ‘short-block’ 60˚ V12, developing a purposeful 300bhp. The 330GTC, unlike so many of its Ferrari predecessors which had been developed as dual purpose road/ race machines, was designed exclusively as a road car and yet its race breeding gave it true sports car performance - it has been said that you could listen to the radio while exceeding 100mph. The cabin was luxuriously appointed in the best ‘Granturismo’ manner and significantly more comfortable than so many of its illustrious predecessors. The model was considered by many in its day to be the best ever V12 Ferrari. Top speed was a genuine 240km/h and Grand Prix driver, Paul Frère, writing in ‘The Motor’ noted: ‘the most impressive feature of the handling of the new vehicle is the solidness with which it changes direction, particularly in S-bends, where it tracks with about the same precision as a modern race car’.

This car, supplied new to Turin early in 1967 and restored for Silvano Cima by Sport Car of Milan in the 1990s, retains its original beige leather upholstery and is now liveried in red, having originally been painted Grigio Scuro Speciale Silverstone. Campagnolo alloy wheels were fitted as standard but the more discerning purchaser could specify Borrani wire wheels as fitted to this car. To left-hand drive specification, chassis ‘9613’ enjoys the benefit of ASI homologation (no.7400) and is Italian registered.
