Lot 126: Fiat 124 Coupe

Auto Moto d'Epoca Padova, Coys (25 October 2008)

This is a rare beast indeed which is based on a Fiat 124 Coupé, employing its chassis as well as the robust and well-tested mechanics. The engine is a Fiat type 125BC000 twin overhead camshaft, 1,608cc, four cylinder unit which, with a compression ratio of 9.8:1 and single double barrel carburettor, produces 110bhp at 6,000rpm, sufficient to propel this handsome machine to a top speed of more than 200kph. However, the body is much less off the peg than the rest of the car. In the 1980s the original was completely replaced by hand-beaten aluminium coachwork over a tubular frame, a concept which has its origins in Touring's famous superleggera principle, as used on many Aston Martins and other cars. The styling of this unique and strikingly beautiful body was heavily inspired by some of the greatest Italian sports and touring cars of the 1950s and 1960s, among them the unforgettable Maserati A6. This body has been designed and made by highly respected Italian coachbuilder Giorgio Greppi of Como. Restored in 2002, the vendor confirms that this very exotic machine is in excellent condition throughout. This is a unique opportunity to acquire a car that combines the style and beauty of a 1950s sports car while retaining the practicality of a trusted more modern Fiat and still remaining eligible for historic registration in most European countries. Offered with Italian registration papers.
