Lot 034: 1984 ROLLS-ROYCE SILVER SPIRIT
An Auction Of Fine Collectors' Motor Cars, H&H Classic Auctions Ltd (16th April 2008)
Launched in 1980, the Silver Spirit relied heavily upon the underpinnings of its Shadow predecessor prompting Autocar to comment that its raison d'etre was more to do with "maintaining traditional standards rather than making a spectacular advance". Nevertheless, the Spirit was credited with handling and roadholding that were "the best yet from Rolls-Royce". Its all-round independent coil-and-wishbone suspension featured automatic, olio-pneumatic ride height control to the rear and adjustable dampers at the front. Powered by the ubiquitous 6750cc, OHV V8 engine mated to three-speed automatic transmission, it was reputedly capable of 120mph and benefited from power assistance to both its disc brakes and steering rack. Importantly, this evolutionary design remained faithful to the luxurious ambience of its predecessors using only the finest quality hides, carpets, chrome fittings and wood veneers for its matchless interior. Only in production between 1980 and 1989 (by which time it had gained Bosch fuel injection), just 8,129 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit Saloons are thought to have been made. Finished in dark silver with mushroom leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, automatic transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Said to have covered "a genuine 33,000 miles with comprehensive service / history file" and to "drive as she looks - beautifully", 'A47 TYF' is apparently accompanied by "all RR documents including handbooks in their leather pack". Summed up by the seller as "absolutely a quality example for the discerning Rolls-Royce owner", this unusually low mileage Silver Spirit possesses a current MOT certificate valid until February 2009. PLEASE NOTE: This lot is accompanied by partial service history.
