Lot 423: 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Roadster with Factory Hard Top
Collectors' Motor Cars, Motorcycles, Bonhams (22nd November 2005)
“Some cars don’t change, they just get better. The Mercedes-Benz 280SL, latest version of a line that began as the 230SL in 1963, is the same as ever, just better,” concluded Road & Track after testing a 280SL in 1968. “For those who value engineering finesse and high quality construction, it’s alone in the field,” enthused the highly respected American motoring magazine.
Although the 280SL was basically similar to the preceding, interim-model 250SL, the newcomer’s 2,778cc, overhead-camshaft, six-cylinder engine was entirely new. Despite having to meet more exacting emissions requirements, maximum power output of the Bosch fuel-injected Type M130 unit was up from 150 to 180bhp, and while the 280’s 124mph top speed was no greater, it was significantly quicker off the mark than the 250. The new car looked better, handled better and was sumptuously equipped. Like its predecessors, the 280SL came with either four-speed manual or automatic transmission as standard and a choice of two higher axle ratios was available. Christened ‘pagoda top’ after their distinctive cabin shape, these ‘SL’ models were amongst the best-loved sports-tourers of their day and remain highly sought after by collectors. Production of the 280SL ceased in March 1971.
This example has recently had its engine professionally rebuilt by an ex-Daimler Benz (Stuttgart) engineer, the work being completed in March 2003. A new Mercedes- Benz exhaust system was fitted in May ’03 and the accompanying factory hardtop given a new headlining in November that same year. Invoices for the headlining (approximately £1,000) and for the engine rebuild by specialists Merc-Care (approximately £8,500) accompany the vehicle. Superbly presented, the car has black leather upholstery to the interior and is equipped with automatic transmission. It is offered with current road fund licence/MoT and Swansea V5 registration document.
