Lot 136: 1974 BMW CSL 3.0 Litre

The BMW 3.0 CSL will always be remembered as one of the most elegant and distinctive sports cars to emerge from the 1970's, but it was also one which provided much competition success, and hence publicity value - beyond all expectations. This period was one of the most exciting categories of racing, the European Touring Car Championship, and the two principal contestants were Ford (Cologne) and BMW. BMW's main weapon was the CSL (Coup Sport Leichtmetal), a lightweight version of the 3.0 CS featuring alloy doors, boot lid and bonnet; more spartan trim. The overhead cam six cylinder engine was fuel injected and delivered 210 b.h.p. with a strong torque throughout the rev. range. The car was as quick at covering real road miles as its acceleration figures on paper led you to believe. The car on offer today was first delivered to renown BMW agents First Front, it is finished in the correct period colour of alpine white and comes fitted with the rare and desirable Alpina specification extras. Apart from the striking green and red Alpina stripes, the other upgrades include a black leather interior, air conditioning, Alpina steering wheel, and Alloy wheels. Recent further inspection of the car has also revealed the fitment of an adjustable rear anti roll bar and other suspension modifications. This example remains in good general condition and on a recent road test drove well. It comes with a small history file which includes the current V5 log book, a new MoT and bills for service and maintenance work both new and old. These classic BMW's have recently received much interest from the buying public as the market has awoken to their value, this fine CSL is all the more desirable in its rare Alpina livery.
