Lot 047: 1960 JAGUAR MK IX
Motor Car sale, H&H Classic Auctions Ltd (22nd November 2006)
The Mark VII was a very big car in its day being some 16 feet long and weighing nigh on two tons and its 16 mpg was daunting with the early two speed automatic thankfully rarely seen in England. This was uprated to the VIIM with 190bhp in 1955 and in 1957 the Mark VIII was introduced. These are rare today, they were at the time as only available for a year, but looked better and had some refinements and an extra 20 bhp. This model gave way in 1959 to the ultimate separate chassis saloon, the Mark IX, which had disc brakes and power assisted steering and now more usually the automatic transmission.
We are very pleased to offer what is probably the best example available anywhere of a Mark IX saloon which dates from 1960. The car has been featured in the Jaguar Drivers Club Magazine and in that article, a copy of which is included in the history file, it traces its entire history. It has completed a mere 36000 miles from new and naturally comes with the 3781cc six cylinder engine and the automatic transmission.
The present titled owner acquired the car three years ago and embarked upon a total refurbishment at a cost in excess of some ú20,000. It was stripped to bare metal and repainted in Dark Blue, a wonderful colour, it had new chrome, new woodwork, a new headlining, all the instrumentation was checked and repaired where necessary, including both the clocks, it was converted to run on unleaded fuel, new radial tyres were fitted and the tool kit was added to so it is complete.
No detail was overlooked by this most fastidious of owners and today you can be the beneficiary of all that dedication. Please Note: This lot is accompanied by a specially commissioned, hand-carved, wooden scale model of a MKIX (approximately fifteen inches long) that is reputed to have cost some ú4,000.
PLEASE NOTE: The estimate on this vehicle is now ú20,000 - 24,000.
