Lot 32: Volkswagen COMBI CAMPER
Classic & Historic, BCA (26th February 2008)
The Volkswagen Type 2 was to make its debut in 1950 being initially based on the early Beetle model. Simple and rugged, the vehicle was to prove its worth in terms of reliability and longevity and, before long, numerous permutations were available. During the 1960s, the Type 2 Combi was to become synonymous with the hippy movement, particularly in the USA where examples were frequently painted in psychedelic colour schemes and kitted out to provide living accommodation. They were a frequent sight at rock festivals and concerts throughout the lands. In recent times, celebrity ownership has raised the profile of these characterful vehicles and the split screen models in all their different guises are especially loved, good examples being keenly sought.1962 was to see various revisions. A heavy-duty model was produced as a factory option giving a cargo capacity of 1 metric tonne a considerable improvement on the earlier models. Also at this time the engine was enlarged, now being 1.5-litres, bringing a welcome increase in hill-climbing ability. The 1964 Combi presented here was imported from California approximately four years ago and has recently seen service as a promotional vehicle. Strikingly finished in orange and white, bearing graphics which should prove easily removable, it has sleeping accommodation although at present there are no kitchen facilities. However, considerable scope is offered to kit the vehicle out to ones own requirements. Seemingly extremely sound, it has recently been fitted with a reconditioned 1500cc engine and on a short test run drove well, everything feeling as it should. We are advised that a narrowed front beam has been fitted using components from the later 'bay window' series model, with the later trailing arms, stub axles and front disc brakes. The rear end now benefits from IRS, again as on the later models, whilst the gearbox is said to be an AM code 1300 type.
