Lot 116: 1985 Audi Quattro Sport Coupé SWB ‘Série 200’
Collectors' Sports & Grand Touring Motor Cars, Bonhams (10th May 2008)
One of the most influential designs of recent decades, the Audi Quattro brought four-wheel drive into the motoring mainstream. Introduced in 1980, the Quattro was based on the outwardly similar Coupé’s practical and stylish three-door ‘fast hatch-back’ bodyshell but used a different floorpan to accommodate its four-wheel-drive transmission and independent rear suspension. The engine was a development of the 2.1-litre, cast-iron block, five-cylinder unit first seen in the 200 saloon, equipped with a KKK turbocharger and producing 200bhp in road trim, considerably more being available in race tune. The motivation behind Audi’s marriage of a Volkswagen military vehicle’s four-wheel-drive system to its new high-performance Coupé had been desire for success in international rallying. In the latter role the Quattro excelled, winning the Manufacturer’s Championship for Audi in 1982 and 1984 and the Driver's Championship in 1983 and ’84, but its enduring legacy would be the demonstration of four-wheel drive’s advantages for passenger cars.
Having achieved significant international success with the original Group 4 Quattro, Audi developed a more specialised rally car in the form of the Quattro Sport, which was homologated under Group B regulations in May 1984. Shorter in the wheelbase by 32cm (12.5”), the 2+2-seater Sport had up to 400bhp available from its 20-valve all aluminium-alloy engine and in rally trim was fitted with a six-speed gearbox. Unfortunately for Audi, Peugeot’s new mid-engined 205 Turbo 16 had arrived to spoil the party, and the Quattro Sport scored only one World Championship victory in 1985.
One of only 200 examples built to meet the Group B homologation requirements, this Quattro Sport has covered only 79,500 kilometres from new. The car is currently owned by an Audi dealer and, as one would expect, has been well looked after and preserved in good original condition. Finished in red with grey Recaro interior, it is offered with original tool kit, Monaco registration papers and Contrôle Technique. A rare opportunity to acquire a limited edition ‘hot hatch’ offering supercar performance.
