Lot 463: 1968 Jaguar E-Type 4.2-Litre Coupé
Collectors' Motor Cars and Motorcycles, Bonhams (9th September 2006)
Launched in October 1964, the 4.2-litre version of Jaguar’s sensational E-Type sports car brought with it a more user friendly all-synchromesh gearbox and a superior Lockheed brake servo along with the bigger, torquier engine. Top speed remained the same at around 150mph, the main performance gain resulting from the larger engine being improved acceleration. Proposed changes to the USA’s safety and emissions legislation prompted the revised Series 2, announced in October 1968, and from late 1967 the E-Type began to embody some of the forthcoming modifications, these interim cars coming to be known as the ‘Series 1½’ although there was never a fixed specification for this unofficial ‘model’. The headlight fairings were deleted and enlarged side/rear lights adopted, while a thickened front bumper centre section bridged a larger radiator intake. Interior changes included a collapsible steering column and rocker switches in place of the earlier toggles.
Manufactured in 1968 during this transitional period, this right-hand drive ‘Series 1½’ Coupé benefits from a comprehensive bodywork restoration undertaken some years ago including a full re-spray and fitting of a Series 1 bonnet. (A photographic record of this work is available for inspection). More recently the mechanicals have been thoroughly overhauled, the engine being freshly rebuilt; new clutch, master and slave cylinders fitted; suspension overhauled front and rear with all new bushes, etc; Coopercraft front brakes and new hoses, etc fitted; rear brakes (including handbrake) overhauled with new callipers, pads, hoses and linkage; rear wheel bearings replaced; one new hub renewed; alternator and starter motor reconditioned; radiator flushed and pressure tested; and all new water hoses installed. Other new parts fitted include the fuel pump, engine mounts, ignition components and countless more minor items. Restored between 1995 and 2005 and finished in Carmen Red with nicely patinated original black leather interior, the latter featuring new Panasonic CD stereo system, this superb E-Type is offered with restoration invoices, current MoT/road fund licence and Swansea V5 document.
