Lot 230: 1970 Dodge Charger R/T 440

The Dodge Charger was a response to the fastback fad started by the Ford Mustang and the Plymouth Barracuda, but on a much larger scale. Based on the midsize Dodge Coronet model, the Charger was launched in 1966 and quickly became a sales hit, particularly with the dramatic fuselage styling of 1968. From the beginning, it packed serious muscle. The 1966 to 1974 Chargers were the high performance B-body models. In 1970 the Charger changed slightly again. This would be the last and rarest year of the second generation Charger which now featured a large wraparound chrome bumper, a radiator grille no longer divided in the middle, electrically rather than vacuum operated headlight covers, side reflectors that were now proper lights and taillights similar to those used in 69, although 500 and R/T models came with a new more attractive taillight panel, the latter also having new rear-facing scoops and the R/T logo mounted on the front doors and over the door scallops. Low sales, higher performance and more options have made the '70 Charger the most collectible of the second generation Chargers. Imported to Great Britain earlier this year from Miami, this R/T 440 is supplied with all EU taxes paid. The car is finished in metallic blue and described as being in good condition throughout, while the 440 cubic inch engine, breathing through a four barrel carburettor, produces 375bhp and gives the car a very good turn of speed.
