Lot 336: 1970 Lamborghini Espada

Lamborghini, born under the sign of the bull, hence the charging bull insignia, adopted bull fighting terms for the names of his cars and his new four seater was to be no exception. Espada, as the car is called, is the sword used by the matador to deliver the fatal wound. Lamborghini once again stole the Geneva show in 1968 with the Espada, styled by Marcello Gandini, the genius who heads Bertone's design studio and whose other designs include the Marzal, Countach, Diablo, Lancia Stratos and Cizeta V16. The bodywork was fitted to the chassis, painted and trimmed at Bertone's Grugliasco factory before being sent to Lamborghini for fitting of the mechanical components. Clearly the Espada was far more advanced than its opposition and the final production figure ran to over 1,200 units, proving it to be as popular as it was capable. Finished in silver with a burgundy interior, this three owner from new Espada is described by the vendor to be in good condition. The car was first delivered to Switzerland in 1970 and has only covered 70,000 kilometers. This fully air conditioned tourer benefits from the more desirable Mk II dashboard and has a large file of receipts totaling over 14,000 in the last few years.
