Lot 104: Porsche 944S Ventilla
Classic - Collectors and Historic Motor Cars, Barons (12th February 2008)
Using the 924 as a starting point for the 944, Porsche thoroughly re-worked the platform and scrapped the Volkswagen engine, installing in its place a new 2.5 litre straight-4 engine based on the 928's 5.0 litre V8, although very few parts were actually interchangeable. This new engine was factory-rated at 147 bhp. The 944 had more aggressive, revised bodywork, similar to that of the 924 Turbo and 924 Carrera GT, a fresh interior and upgrades to the braking and suspension systems. Porsche introduced the 944 in 1982/83 to great anticipation. In addition to being faster, the 944 was better equipped and more refined than the 924, it had better handling and stopping power and was more comfortable to drive. In 1987, the naturally-aspirated 944S and a limited edition "Ventilla" model was introduced. The 944S had a more powerful engine (190 bhp), which marked the first use of four valve per cylinder heads in the 944 series. Also in 1987, dual air-bags and an anti-lock brake system were introduced as options on the base model. Wheel offset was increased from 23 mm (0.9 in) to 52 mm to provide clearance for the optional ABS brakes. This example of the 944S Ventilla is said to be in excellent condition throughout and is offered complete with 11 previous MoT certificates, a service book containing 30 stamps and a cherished registration, which is valued at around £500.Finished in champagne gold with tan leather interior, the car is described as being a credit to its previous owners.
