Lot 182: 1957 Jawa 48cc Pionier
Professor Fritz Ehn Motorcycle Museum Collection, Bonhams (30th June 2008)
Little- imported into this country, the range of mopeds made by the Czechoslovakian firm of Jawa consisted of robust little machines renowned for their reliability. In an economy where the supply of spare parts was erratic at best, the ability for the very well-made Jawa Pionier ( Pioneer was a key party word under Communism ) to keep going was well-known. It was affectionately better known as the Jawa ‘Stumpf’ (Stumpy) because of its short-tailed appearance.
This remarkable survivor was bought by the Ehn museum as an excellent example of its type being finished in its original red, and is believed to be in excellent condition with good compression and some paperwork. It will, of course, need some re-commissioning before use.
