Lot 137: 1958 MG A Roadster 1500cc

For the debut of its new MG 'A' in 1955, MG wisely chose that year's Le Mans 24 hour race; after a succession of open-wheeled models there were fears of an adverse reaction to such a streamlined car and it was felt that by showing the MG 'A' in competition first the aerodynamic shape would be accepted as a performance essential. There had been some delays, however, in getting the go ahead for production, MG owner BMC declining, having already agreed with Donald Healey to build the Austin Healey 100. It was the success of a highly streamlined MG 'A' prototype, which took several speed records up to 153mph that finally persuaded BMC to relent. With 68bhp at 5,500rpm - soon raised to 72bhp - the MG 'A' was capable of 0-60mph in 15 seconds and 97mph while the predictable handling, via independent coil spring front suspension and a live rear axle with leaf springs, was almost foolproof. In July 1959 the MG 'A' became the MG 'A' 1600 with 1,588cc engine and standard Lockheed front disc brakes; power was now 80bhp and improved torque gave improved performance - 0-60mph in 14.2 seconds and 100mph. An original left hand drive roadster, this car was imported from the USA approximately 10 years ago. Having been restored in Holland the car remains in very fine order, the red paintwork still good, the black re trimed seats and the original red carpets all in fine condition. Fitted with wire wheels and a new hood the car runs and drives well, and is supplied with Dutch registration papers.
