Lot 325: Aston Martin DB6 4.2-Litre Saloon
Sale of Aston Martin and Lagonda Motor Cars, Bonhams (9th May 2009)
Announced at the London Motor Show in October 1965, the Aston Martin DB6, with its distinctive rear spoiler, represented the ultimate version of a superlative Grand Touring line that had begun with the DB4 of 1958. The biggest single factor in the success of the series was the decision by general manager John Wyer that the car be styled by Carrozzeria Touring in Italy instead of the works. The result was the close-coupled DB4 coupé (a 'saloon' in factory parlance), the superb lines of which were perpetuated on the DB5 and DB6. However, the latter was to prove more popular than its predecessors because a conscious effort had been made to improve rear passenger accommodation and so appeal to the family man. The wheelbase was therefore extended by 3¾ to 8' 5¾ and the roofline raised, while the new rear end also incorporated an aerodynamically efficient 'Kamm' tail. The 4.0-litre twin overhead camshaft six-cylinder engine was effectively carried over from its DB5 predecessor and gave the DB6 a top speed of 140mph plus.
First registered in September 1968, this DB6 was first owned by one Bernice Josephine Nott, who kept it until November 1979 when it was acquired by one Raymond Kingston, of Northampton. In total the car has had eight owners from new (details on file) including the current vendor, who acquired it in May 2007. Some 77,000 miles have been covered in total, approximately 2,000 of them by the present owner.
This stunning car is finished in Dubbonet Rosso with original natural hide interior and boasts a specification to match its wonderful condition. In excess of £83,000 has been spent over the past nine years on maintenance, repairs and improvements with R S Williams and Aston Workshop. Work carried out has included fitting a new air conditioner, upgraded aluminium radiator, radio, Wilton carpeting, dashboard wiring and repairing all the gauges, while the engine has been fully rebuilt to 4.2 litres capacity and converted to accept unleaded fuel. In addition, this car boasts the desirable power steering option, a handling upgrade, new wheels and a concealed music system. '3476' features the five-speed manual gearbox and this, combined with the upgraded engine, makes for exhilarating and effortless performance. Offered with current road fund licence, MoT to March 2010 and Swansea V5, this car has been maintained regardless of cost, comes with an excellent history file and is difficult to fault.
