Lot 122: Jaguar E-Type SI 4.2 Roadster
Jaguar Heritage + Collectors, Barons (16th June 2009)
The Series One, 4.2 E-Type Roadster is the rarest of the bunch and, some would say, the best. The model retained the original styling of the Series One but gained the torquey 4.2 XK engine, all syncro gearbox and comfy seats of the Series Two. Alas, the model was only around for two years before American legislation forced major changes and the Series Two was launched.
This Series One, 4.2 Roadster was originally supplied to Jaguar Cars, New York in November 1965. The Golden sand livery with black leather was a special order and this colour scheme is confirmed in the JDHT Heritage Certificate.
1991 saw the car repatriated to the UK and it was acquired, by the vendor, in 1994. Between 1995 and 1996, the car underwent restoration at Ladywell Classics before being registered and first used in 1996. The car then suffered a paint reaction and some mechanical maladies and was laid up until 2008.
Come right up to date and the car is has now benefited from a comprehensive restoration, by The Carrosserie Car Company of Barnard Castle, to the highest standards. The body shell was stripped to bare metal, wax injected, rustproofed lead loaded and repainted in the original colour. The 4.2 engine was stripped and sent to VSE in Wales for a full rebuild, while the brakes and cooling system were restored and upgraded with new servo, new calipers, new master cylinder, Radtech high performance fan, alloy radiator cowl and larger radiator.
Once rebuilt the car underwent a road test and set-up period by the MD of Carrossierie, Dick Francis, when it covered around 200 miles and ii now performs impeccably. It now sits on new MWS Chrome wires, with stainless steel spokes, is equipped with a stainless exhaust system and a correct for period Mohair hood. The black leather interior is described as virtually perfect.
The panel fit and paint finish on this car are described as being of outstanding quality and the quality of the workmanship is evident. The car was recently valued, for insurance purposes, by the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club at £63000 and described as a numbers matching car of the highest quality.
The car is offered complete with an extensive history file, a CD rom of the 2008 restoration and all invoices for the recent works, which amount to well over £30,000.
There are classic cars and there are classic cars. There are E-Type Jaguars and there are E-Type Jaguars. This is one of those classic E-Types that rarely come onto the market and must be seen to be fully appreciated.
